Bacterial vaginosis is caused by many species of bacteria including the Gardnerella vaginitism, which was previously thought to be the sole culprit of the infection. Contrary to population notion, these bacteria are natural inhabitants of the vaginal area that, for some reason or another, grew to excess and, hence, lead to the most common vaginal infection.
Bacterial vaginosis symptoms are very similar to the vaginal yeast infection such as vaginal skin inflammation, itching and burning and unusually thick white discharges. The main difference is that bacterial vaginosis symptoms include an additional complication – the vaginal discharge has a malodorous fishy smell that may or may not be grayish white in color. And when left untreated in pregnant women, it can lead to complications like premature labor and birth as well as infections of the amniotic fluid and the uterus.
Fortunately, you have many all-natural, all-effective treatments available for bacterial vaginosis. The emphasis is on the use of safe natural methods since pharmaceutical drugs will only worsen the bacterial vaginosis symptoms due to the presence of excess antibiotics in them. Did we mention that antibiotics provide the perfect environment for the bacteria to grow out of bounds?
These natural treatments include herbs and liquids found in abundance in your kitchen pantry and in herbal stores. The trick is in combining them for maximum effect, of which the following ways are just a few:
o You can mix one teaspoon of the juice of fresh garlic cloves with a few tablespoons of plain, low-fat yogurt. (Don’t use the sweetened and flavored varieties since sugar is a big no-no in bacterial vaginosis) You will then soak a clean tampon into the mixture, which you should insert in your vagina on a nightly basis for up to 6 days. You may also use the mixture as a douche for at least two times a day.
o You may also use tea tree oil. Just mix three drops of tea tree essential oil with one teaspoon of plain yogurt. Again, soak a clean tampon into the mixture, insert into the vagina for at least 6 days and wait for the tea tree oil’s antifungal properties to work their wonders on your bacterial vaginosis symptoms.
o You can also turn to the aromatic chamomile for relief of your bacterial vaginosis. Mix in about 2 ounces of chamomile flowers with 1 quart of warm water, which should be allowed to steep in a covered container overnight. Strain out the plant materials and use the resulting water as a vaginal douche for at least 2 times a day.
o For more choices in treatment, you can either consume goldenseal capsules or goldenseal teas, both of which are equally effective due to the presence of berberine and hydrastine. These two chemical compounds have natural antibacterial and antifungal properties.
While you are treating your bacterial vaginosis symptoms, you must avoid using scented bath products, eating sugar and stimulant-laden foods and drinks, and wear comfortable cotton underwear to let your private parts “breathe”.
No matter the treatment approach adopted for bacterial vaginosis symptoms, you must never let boric acid touch your private parts lest you worsen the symptoms. Instead, opt for natural treatments that have been proven time and time again to be more effective than any other kind of acidic substances with the exception of white vinegar.
